The Republican Party’s ugly, hateful attacks on young immigrants known as DREAMers has taken an even uglier turn.
Looking to turn the president’s annual State of the Union Address into a police action, Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) tweeted on Tuesday that he has contacted the Capitol Police, as well as the U.S. Attorney General’s office, and urged them to check “identification of all attending the State of the Union address” and possibly “arresting any illegal aliens in attendance.”
“Any illegal aliens attempting to go through security, under any pretext of invitation or otherwise, should be arrested and deported,” Gosar added.
The police state-like request comes as far-right conservatives in the media pump up the hate rhetoric on immigration and specifically call for mass arrests in the halls of Congress Tuesday night.
Gosar’s ugly attempt at intimidation arrives as Democratic members of Congress are expected to bring dozens of immigration activists as guests to view Donald Trump’s address.
This, as the government remains embroiled in debate about how to protect the futures of young, undocumented immigrants who were brought to America as children by their parents.
Last September, Trump canceled the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program initiated under President Barack Obama, which offers protections from deportation for the DREAMers. Unless a deal is reached by March 5, those protections will expire and 800,000 immigrants could be rounded up and kicked out of their homes.
The White House claims it’s willing to provide a path forward for young DREAMers, though according to budget director Mick Mulvaney, that path “depends on what we get in exchange.” A recent proposal from the White House is weighed down by white nationalists demands to hugely reduce the number of legal immigrants allowed into the country.
Two weeks ago, Trump sidetracked negotiations when he derided “shithole” countries that send America black immigrants.
And now fringe players like Gosar raise the specter of would-be arrests on a night when the president is supposed to bring the country together with a televised address.
Among the DREAMers who will be attending Tuesday night is Esli Becerra, a 26-year-old who arrived in the U.S. at 8 months old, and his brother, Kevin Becerra-Segura, who was born in Oregon. They will be guests of Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR).
“I love this country and just want to continue contributing to my community, my employer and my family without fear and uncertainty,” Becerra said in a statement Monday.
It should be noted that Gosar is a chronic liar about immigration and is also publicly loathed even by his siblings — his brother has dubbed him an “embarrassment.”
Makes sense.
